Ohio State Auditor Warns to Stay Vigilant Amidst Rise in BEC Schemes
As discussions about cybersecurity become increasingly prevalent among both individuals and businesses, cyber criminals continuously devise new methods to execute their fraudulent schemes. Ohio governments, in particular, have seen a surge in spear phishing attacks, notably in the form of payment "re-direct" and business email compromise (BEC) schemes.
This trend prompted the Ohio Auditor of State’s Office to release a new bulletin (2024-003) aimed at educating government and public employees. The bulletin outlines expectations and highlights potential negative consequences for employees found to be liable or negligent. By introducing these new standards, the goal is to foster a sense of shared responsibility, encouraging heightened vigilance and a stronger commitment to preventing these crimes.
